Istanbul, Haghia Sophia 2

The Aya Sofia is one of the highlights of any visit to Istanbul. There are not many original angles to photograph it from, but I tried to find one. I think the dominating crescent of the moon on the top nicely reflects the history of this church. After what the west calls the sacking of Constantinopel and what the Turks call its liberation, the muslim rulers did not destroy the magnificent Byzantine Church but changed it into a mosque. In 1924 the great reformer Kemal Ataturk turned it into a museum.
